Fall Allergies Season: Treat Sinus Infection Symptoms Naturally with a Neti Pot and Lymphatic Drainage Massage for Sinus Drainage with Colds and Flu

St Petersburg Florida Spa offers Natural Cold and Flu Therapies to Remedy Sinus Infections with Herbs, Homeopathy and Lymph Drainage Massage Therapy

Cold and Flu season is upon us as is the dreaded fall allergy season that yields sinus congestion, sinus infections and nasal drainage and stuffy heads.

Each year our clients and customers complain of this season with pangs of nasal congestion, post nasal drip, sore throats and cloudy heads.  And each year, I recommend two simple treatments to naturally treat and cure sinus infections....

1. Daily use of a Neti Pot

2. Lymph System Sinus Drainage Massage

What is a Neti Pot?

So many clients ask, what in the heck is a neti pot?

A neti pot is an ancient healing art of sinus drainage via nasal irrigation.  A neti pot is something that looks like a little tea pot for your nose.  It's a way of cleaning the sinuses to prevent sinus infections and allergies and helps improve breathing and sleep.

How do I use a Neti Pot?

Using a neti pot is often a hard concept for my clients.  The idea of putting water up ones nose doesn't sound too appealing.  It conjours up memories of swimming and getting water up the nose that was often painful. Some of my clients who balk at using the neti pot give it one try and once they feel comfortable and experience the immediate results, they get very comfortable with performing the neti pot routine daily.

Typically, to use the Neti pot or other nasal irrigation device you would mix about 16 ounces (1 pint) of lukewarm water with 1 teaspoon of sea salt.  Avoid using table salt, especially iodized table salt - it is harmful to the sinuses.

Some people add addition items to the pot - a few drops of betadine, colloidal silver and zinc. Use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water to make up the irrigation solution.

Once you've filled the Neti pot, tilt your head over the sink at about a 45-degree angle. Place the spout into your top nostril, and gently pour the saline solution into that nostril.

The fluid will flow through your nasal cavity and out the other nostril.  Please wait to blow your nose for at least 10 minutes  You might get a little dripping and even some solution that may drain down your throat.  Blowing your nose will cause congestion and might cause damage to the ear canal and the tubes between the sinuses and the ears.

**Sometimes, for severely inflamed sinuses or deviated sinuses, some of the solution may stay in the nasal passages for a few hours.  If you bend down to tie your shoes or reach for something, it can be common for a few drops to flow out of your nose.

How does a neti pot work to cure a sinus infection?

The basic explanation of how the Neti pot works is that it thins mucus and helps flush it out of the nasal passages. Within the mucus are allergens from the environment and any beginnings of viral, bacterial and fungal invasions.

A more biological explanation for how the Neti pot works has to do with tiny, hair-like structures called cilia that line the inside of the nasal and sinus cavities.
These cilia wave back and forth to push mucus either to the back of the throat where it can be swallowed, or to the nose to be blown out. Saline solution can help increase the speed and improve coordination of the cilia so that they may more effectively remove the allergens and other irritants that cause sinus problems.

Saline solution and any natural herbals/homeopathic blends you add to the pot help clean and support healthy sinuses.  I've recommended daily Neti Pot to clients who have had frequent sinus infections, allergies and sinusitis and over a span of a few days- they've noticed major differences.  Some have not had any sinus troubles since using the neti pot.

Drain Sinus Naturally with Lymphatic Drainage Facial Massage

With lymph massage of the head and neck the sinuses can drain and decongest the lymphatic system.  Lymphatic drainage therapy concentrates on specific lymph nodes under the jaw line. The main lymph nodes for facelift massage are pea size and under the mandible. During a face massage, the lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes are stimulated to open and enhance circulatory and lymphatic flow.

Lymphatic drainage massage can be helpful in addressing a very wide range of conditions.  It can reduce fatigue, toxicity, menstrual cramps, cellulite, water retention and sinusitis and hay fever symptoms from allergies.  When an individual suffers from allergies, the immune system kicks in and it begins to react to the pollen, mold spores, fungal and viral exposure bombarding the body as foreign invaders.  The result in irritation and inflammation.  Lymphatic drainage massage allows the practitioner to, in a non-invasive manner, tap into the sinuses to relieve hayfever, stuffiness, congestion and irritation.

Sinus Drainage Massage is really the only option that helps to drain the sinuses but also helps enhance the immune system to prevent colds, flu and sinus infections.  It also helps the body do what it does best, heal and recover and will ease the symptoms of colds, flu and sinus infections.

Healthy Being Wellness Center and Lymphatic Drainage Therapist, Melissa Gallagher, offer Lymphatic Facial Drainage Massage to our clients in St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tampa, Largo, Seminole and all three counties in our are: Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco.

Spinach

Spinach

Spinacia oleracea
Amaranthaceae

Popeye wasn’t kidding when he said eating spinach was his trick to being fit and strong. Spinach is one of the most nutrient filled foods in the world and has been in the food spotlight for the last few years thanks to baby spinach salads and creamy spinach dips.

What makes spinach so special is the number of amazing nutrients that it packs into its small leafy frame. Spinach is rich in vitamin K, vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin B2, vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin B. It also has an abundance of folate, iron, calcium, zinc, protein, copper, magnesium, selenium and fiber. Spinach is similar to salmon in that it contains the amazing omega-3 fatty acids. Additionally, it has lutein and many flavonoid compounds. With so many nutrients Popeye is starting to look like a smart guy! The healing properties of spinach are practically endless. Here are a few:

1. Flavonoid compounds make it effective in cancer prevention

2. Carotenoid compounds help maintain good prostate health

3. Vitamin K helps keep bones healthy and strong

4. Vitamins C and A help prevent heart attacks by cleaning up the free radicals in your blood stream

5. Promotes colon health

6. Protects against dangerous diseases like dementia

7. Helps brain function after a stroke

With so many healing attributes it’s no surprise that spinach has become a popular item at the dinner table. Baby spinach salads are the fad right now but there are many other ways to eat spinach. If you’re in a southern cooking mood you can try cooking creamed spinach or wet spinach, which is, similar to collard greens. If you want more of a lunchtime favorite try spinach on top of a chicken breast in a pita or use it to complement a fresh mozzarella and tomato salad.
Bonus Tip: spinach is best eaten raw for the maximum nutrient punch... if you cook it avoid doing so for too long as it can lose up to 50% of its mineral content.

NOTE: spinach has goitrogens which can inhibit thyroid function therefore we like to suggest to people experiencing hypothyroidism to limit its consumption, and to enjoy it cooked. As we said before not all people experiencing hypothyroidism respond the same way to goitrogenic foods. That is why weencourage these people to be very aware of the unique way their bodies respond and to eat with gusto and joy, never with fear!

Non Pharmacological Pain Management Clinics Ease Pain Naturally in St. Petersburg Fl 33702

St. Petersburg Florida and Pinellas county is a hot bed for pain management clinics and drug enhance pain management programs.  Not only is pain management medication abuse and addiction a major problem for the entire state of Florida -our county, Pinellas County, happens to be the highest ranking county in pain management clinics and individuals on prescription pain medications is alarming.

We receive calls and inquiries from our spa clients about ways they can combat pain....severe pain from spinal issues, herniated discs, car accidents, dental surgery, fibromyalgia, lupus, MS and the list goes on.  We have clients as young as 17 who have been prescribed legal narcotics for pain that could be alleviated in a natural, more body-agreeable ways.

Recently, I've begun working with an amazing client who was a victim of the pain management system.  Her story resonates with so many other clients who come to my naturopathic practice seeking an alternative to pain management medications. Many of our clients are seeking the natural detoxification from pain management meds.

I'd like to share today several recommendations for alternative options to pain management medications.  These alternatives are complimentary to your body and will not negatively or permanently impact your body and brain chemistry.

The one sad aspect that I see from pain management clinics and prescription pain meds is the alarming altering of an individuals bio chemistry.  The ability of these strong meds to change the hormone cycle, endanger the endocrine system - severely retarding the adrenals, thyroid and pituitary glands is overwhelming.  Often clients who are dealing with pain meds are also prescribed anti-depressants which further compounds the situation.

The common complain we here clients who choose natural and alternative pain management therapies is that the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, don't agree with their stomachs, and they are very wary of stronger meds or have taken them and found it just isn't the route they would prefer to take on their healing journey.

At Healthy Being Wellness Center we offer a pain management program designed to modulate and eliminate the impact of pain from both short-term and chronic conditions. This plan is also very beneficial to athletes who are suffering from injuries related to their chosen sport. Treatments include a medical evaluation, sports massage, education, acupuncture, and more.

Neuromuscular Therapy is a gentle, respectful treatment that addresses the source of many kinds of soft tissue pain. It treats muscular imbalances and connective tissue restrictions that cause joints to wear unevenly, movements to be restricted, and pain to result. The process helps to reintegrate the person into the body, creating an understanding of how the body communicates and the dynamics involved

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmical, precise massage therapy. MLD alleviates pain by greatly reducing the pain signals sent to the brain and also relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, thus helping to relieve tension caused by pain.

Acupuncture In acupuncture, disposable, stainless steel needles are used to stimulate the body's 14 major meridians, or energy-carrying channels, to resist or overcome illnesses and conditions by correcting these imbalances.
Acupuncture is also thought to decrease pain by increasing the release of chemicals that block pain, called endorphins.

Many acu-points are near nerves. When stimulated, these nerves cause a dull ache or feeling of fullness in the muscle. The stimulated muscle sends a message to the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord), causing the release of endorphins (morphine-like chemicals produced in our own bodies during times of pain or stress). Endorphins, along with other neurotransmitters (body chemicals that modify nerve impulses), block the message of pain from being delivered up to the brain

Acupuncture isuseful as an accompanying treatment for many pain-related conditions, including: headache, low back pain, menstrual cramps, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis and myofascial pain.

Reiki This unique style of healing together with aromatherapy and connecting the breath with the muscles, will clear out patterns of tensions and restrictions. This will bring forth a sense of calmness to the body, peace of mind and a renewed spirit

Counseling will provide you with the space needed to release painful emotions as well as an opportunity to learn new, adaptive coping skills to deal with life’s difficulties. You will learn techniques, such as guided imagery and other relaxation methods that specifically target your ability to shift attention away from the pain thereby reducing discomfort. Integrating these new coping skills will pave the path to emotional and physical pain relief, making each day pleasurable and pain-free

Here are several supplementation recommendations that should accompany the therapies outlined above:

  • Fish oil: For joint pain from arthritis or autoimmune disorders
What the science says: Digested fish oil breaks down into hormone-like chemicals called prostaglandins, which reduce inflammation. In one study, about 40 percent of rheumatoid arthritis patients who took cod-liver oil every day were able to cut their NSAID use by more than a third, Scottish scientists recently reported. People with neck and back pain have fared even better: After about 10 weeks, nearly two-thirds were able to stop taking NSAIDs altogether in a University of Pittsburgh study.

Dosage: Taking 1,000 mg is proven to help your heart, but you should up the dose for pain. For osteoarthritis, try 2,000 to 4,000 mg daily; for rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune diseases associated with joint pain (such as lupus), consider a much higher dose of upwards of 8,000 mg daily

  • SAM-e (S adenosylmethionine): For osteoarthritis
What the science says: SAM-e is made from a naturally occurring amino acid and sold as capsules. Doctors aren't entirely sure why it tamps down pain, but it reduces inflammation and may increase the feel-good brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine.

Studies by the University of Maryland School of Nursing and the University of California, Irvine, showed that SAM-e was as effective as some NSAIDs in easing osteoarthritis aches; the California researchers found that SAM-e quashed pain by 50 percent after 2 months, though it took a few weeks to kick in. SAM-e produced no cardiovascular risks and fewer stomach problems than the conventional meds.

  • Aquamin: For osteoarthritis
What the science says: This red seaweed supplement is rich in calcium and magnesium. A preliminary clinical study showed that the ingredients may reduce joint inflammation or even help build bone, says David O'Leary of Marigot, Aquamin's Irish manufacturer. In a study of 70 volunteers published in Nutrition Journal, Aquamin users reduced arthritis pain by 20 percent in a month, and had less stiffness than patients taking a placebo.

Dosage: 2,400 mg a day (two capsules) of Aquamin in tablet form.

Minimize Breast Pain with Breast Massage and Lymph Drainage in St Petersburg Fl

Breast Massage for Greater Breast Health and Breast Cancer Prevention by Moving the Lymph

Gentle therapeutic breast massage and lymphatic breast care are ideal for maintaining healthy breasts, reducing pain, swelling and other breast problems.  Research shows that Regular massage can help prevent and detect breast cancer.   According to Susun S. Weed, author of "Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way," breast massage helps to prevent breast cancer by improving the immune system and moving lymph fluids through lymph nodes under the arms.

Research indicates that our lifestyle choices create and support our breast health as they do overall health and wellness. Food and supplements, exercise, eliminating exposure to toxins, eliminating smoking, wearing well fitted non-underwire bras, reducing stress and balancing hormones are a great start. What isn’t discussed in prevention and general health is breast massage and maintaining healthy breast lymph.

The lymphatic system is part your immune system.

The lymph (blood plasma and white blood cells) circulates through the body tissues transporting debris and toxins from tissue to the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes then enable the body to rid itself of these toxins.

Since breast tissue is well-supplied with lymphatics but lack sources of external compression (such as muscles or strong overlying fascia) to promote the natural lymphatic drainage found in most other body tissues, fluid has a tendency to accumulate in the breast. The light-touch specific approach of Lymph Drainage Therapy provides an ideal solution to fluid stagnation.

Lymph Drainage Therapy is an appropriate and practical gentle, light-touch, non-invasive breast massage technique that can be used by trained therapist for specific conditions and indications relating to breast care.

Lymphatic Breast Massage can help:
Mentrual Cycles:
  • Breast pain (mastodynia, mastalgia or mammalgia)
  • Swollen breasts

Breast Feeding or Pregnancy:
  • Engorgement
  • Sore nipples (transient or chronic)
  • Inflammation or infection: mastedeneitis, mastitis, yeast infection, infected Montgomery gland, etc
  • Milk stasis: plugged duct, filled duct, plugged nipple pore
  • Bruise, wound (nipples aereola, breast), fissures, ulceration, hemorrhages
  • Dermatitis: eczema, psoriasis
  • Stretch marks

Fibrocycstic Breast/ Non-malignant Lump:
  • Many nonmalignant lumps may resolve quickly with Lymph Drainage Therapy

Pre/Post Surgical Lymphatic Drainage
and Cosmetic Applications
  • Breast implant problems, post mastectomy, post lumpectomy, post tram flap, post lat flap, post breast reduction
  • Improvement in local venolymphatic circulation, removal of toxins, tissue reoxygenation, regeneration of skin tissue, skin tonification, and mastoptosis (breast sagging)
  • Scars (acute and chronic)

Other Applications Related to Breast Health:
  • Decrease hot flashes
  • Fibrocystic Breasts
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Early breast cancer detection
  • Self care drainage techniques given by your therapist (self massage, dry body brushing, change in type of bra worn)
  • Thermography has detected metabolic changes within the breast tissue or lymphatic congestion

What to Expect from Breast Massage:

Your Lymphatic Drainage therapist has an accurate knowledge of the specific anatomy, physiology and related hand techniques involved so the practitioner can attune to the precise rhythm, direction, depth and quality of the lymph flow. Heavy pressure will NOT be applied to breast tissue.Deep pressure may not only hurt (the client) but may destroy the few suspensory ligaments (Cooper’s ligament) and elastic fibers which prevent sagging (mastoptosis).

Whatever lymph territory the therapist is working on, the lymph will be sent to the group of lymph nodes responsible for draining of that area. In the case of the breast, most of the lymphatics (over 90%) drain to the armpit lymph nodes. Lymphatics will usually always be softly stimulated in the neck, armpits (axillas), abdomen, breast mammary tissue, retromammary space (behind the breast), groin, and ribcage when receiving a breast massage session.

Our therapists respect and honor your trust at all times. Proper draping is always provided for our client’s comfort and securityduring breast massage. In fact, we use a specialized modality of lymphatic drainage massage that does not require physical touch.  Instead we use a tool that helps to massage and move lymph fluid in both the superficial and deeper lymphatic system.  This allows us to offer a pain free, pressure free, hands free breast massage.  Unless there are scars on the breast that require work, with a clients permission, we may work more directly on the breast.

Clients are required to sign a release form given our therapists permission to conduct breast work.

Clients may always stop a massage for any reason at any time during the treatment process and this request will be honored with no questions asked.

Think you may be experiencing something that requires lymph breast massage intervention?  Please call our office for more information or to set up your initial breast health assessment.

Sugary Facts

Sugary Facts
Sugar, like starch, is a carbohydrate. There are many different types of and names for sugar. For example sucrose or ‘table sugar’ is added to drinks, baked goods and confectionery. Fructose is naturally found in fruit and honey and lactose is naturally present in milk. Glucose is one of the simplest forms of sugar and is the basic building block of starch. Starch is the main form of carbohydrate found in bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, pulses, whole grains and cereals. Glucose is also the type of sugar that circulates in the blood, often referred to as ‘blood sugar’ or ‘blood glucose’, and provides the body with energy.

Carbohydrates are the body’s main energy source and sugar is an important source of carbohydrates. Sugar also has an important role in providing flavour and texture to foods. As sugar contains calories but few nutrients, eating too much sugar and foods and drinks rich in added sugars, instead of other foods, may make your diet less nutritious.

The only health problem directly linked to sugar is tooth decay. Bacteria in the mouth use sugars to produce tooth-damaging acid.Weight gain occurs when we eat more calories than we burn.  Sugary foods and drinks can only make us gain weight if overall we eat more calories than we use for energy. One level teaspoon of sugar (4g) contains 16 calories and as sugary foods (e.g. chocolate, cakes and biscuits) and drinks taste great and can be rich in calories, it is easy to eat too many calories from sugary products.

Some research suggests that sugary drinks make it harder for us to regulate the overall amount of calories eaten and a regular intake may be a factor contributing to obesity in children, diabetes is caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.  However being overweight increases the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. People with a family history of diabetes are advised to enjoy a healthy diet and regular exercise to control their weight.

There is no evidence to suggest that low calorie sweeteners, such as saccharin, aspartame and sucralose, are bad for you.  All ingredients added to foods, including low calorie sweeteners, undergo rigorous safety testing before being approved safe for human consumption. Low calorie sweeteners provide a sweet taste to food but little or no calories and they are often used in products such as diet soft drinks, sugar free chewing gum and confectionery and yogurts.People with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic condition, need to restrict their intake of phenylalanine. This is an amino acid (a building block for protein) which is found naturally in many foods and as part of the sweetener aspartame.

A moderate amount of sugar can be eaten as part of a healthy balanced diet. The maximum recommended daily intake of sugars (excluding lactose) is approximately 60 grams per day (10% of our total calorie intake). This includes honey, table sugar and sugars in fruit juices and processed foods.

Many food labels provide information on the amount of sugar in foods but do not distinguish between
total sugars and added sugars. The nearer the sugar is to the start of the ingredients list, the greater the amount in the product. Traffic Light Labelling on some food and drink packaging provides a quick guide to the level of fat, saturated fat, salt and sugar in foods and drinks.  A red light for sugar means a high sugar content, an amber light means it has medium sugar content and a green light means it is low in sugar.

Allium cepa

BULB
Onions belong to the genus Allium along with garlic, chives, shallots, and leeks. The common onion (Allium cepa) is widely grown in Iowa gardens. Onions are grown chiefly as green onions or dry bulbs. A perfectly developed onion will have 13 leaves and 13 rings of scales around the bulb. Each leaf corresponds with a ring in the bulb. Almonds - Health Benefits

Almonds - Health Benefits
Almonds can benefit the body in so many ways that it’s hard to believe such a small nut can pack this much punch. There are many different reasons why almonds are such a powerful food; probably the best way to explain this is by taking a look at all of the nutrients, healing properties, and of course, the best way to eat them.

The extensive nutrients contained in almonds include, among others, vitamin E, vitamin B2, protein, magnesium and potassium. Additionally, almonds are high in dietary fiber and monounsaturated fat, also
known as the “good fat”, which is found in olive oil.

With respect to heart disease, the healing properties of almonds pack a one, two punch. For example, the monounsaturated fats, when ingested, help lower LDL cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease. Studies have proven that eating almonds over a period of only two weeks can have a positive impact on LDL levels. Vitamin E, an antioxidant, helps lower cholesterol and magnesium reduces stress on veins and arteries by increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain and throughout the body.

For optimal cellular health vitamin B2 is essential. Your body has a high amount of oxygen-containing molecules that are used to produce energy. Sometimes, these molecules can be reactive and cause damage
to the mitochondria; however, this can be prevented with a protein molecule called glutathione, which vitamin B2 allows being recycled within the body. Essentially, without vitamin B2 the glutathione would not be able to recycle itself and defend your mitochondria against danger.

Beyond heart and cellular health almonds possess an array of healing properties that help promote weight loss and colon health as well as protecting you from anemia. Did you know that a quarter of a cup of almonds contains over 4 g of fiber – a whopping 16% of the daily requirement? Or, that eating almonds are a great alternative to red meat for getting your daily dose of protein? Healthy cooking ideas for almonds are far from traditional. You can of course eat them as is, in fact, many health experts recommend eating the skin of an almond to get the maximum benefit. However, there are more
creative ways to get your daily almond fix – for example:

1. Add fresh almonds to a salmon salad in addition to lemon juice and capers
2. If you don’t eat fish, try almonds with some yogurt for a tasty treat
3. For a twist on a holiday favorite try adding almonds to cranberry sauce for a wonderful taste
4. Almond shavings can also be added to a variety of main dishes including roasted chicken with mango for an island flavor.
Can you think of a better tasting way to stay healthy? Make almonds part of your daily life and your body will reap the rewards!

Broccoli - Health Benefits

Broccoli - Health Benefits

Brassica oleracea
Family:Brassicaceae

Broccoli is a member of the cabbage family, and is closely related to cauliflower. Its cultivation originated in Italy. Broccolo, its Italian name, means "cabbage sprout." Broccoli's name is derived from the Latin word brachium, which means branch or arm, a reflection of its tree-like shape that features a compact head of florets attached by small stems to a larger stalk. Because of its different components, this vegetable provides a complex of tastes and textures, ranging from soft and flowery (the florets) to fibrous and crunchy (the stem and stalk). Its color can range from deep sage to dark green to purplish-green, depending upon the variety. One of the most popular types of broccoli sold in North America is known as Italian green, or Calabrese, named after the Italian province of Calabria where it first grew.

1. The health benefits of broccoli along with the easy availiability of this super vegetable make it one of our most popular vegetables.

2. Broccoli provides a high amount of vitamin C, which aids iron absorption in the body, prevents the development of cataracts, and also eases the symptoms of the common cold.

3. The folic acid in broccoli helps women sustain normal tissue growth and is often used as a supplement when taking birth control pills and during pregnancies.

4. The potassium in broccoli aids those battling high blood pressure, while a large amount of calcium helps combat osteoporosis.

5. The vegetable is also fiber-rich, which enhances the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, as well as aims to reduce blood cholesterol levels.

6. In recent years, broccoli has made the headlines regarding three components found in the vegetable. For instance, indole-3-carbinol has captured the attention of those looking to prevent hormone-related cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer.

7. I3C promotes "good" hormones, while working against destructive ones. The sulforaphane in broccoli also helps to increase the level of enzymes that block cancer, while the beta-carotene in broccoli transforms into vitamin A within the body, providing an effective antioxidant that destroys free radicals (responsible for weakening the defense of cells).

8. Additionally, the health benefits of broccoli have been linked to preventing and controlling the following medical concerns: Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, calcium deficiencies, stomach and colon cancer, malignant tumors, lung cancer, heart disease, arthritis, and even the aging process.

9. The next time you're shopping for vegetables, note that some broccoli tops appear purplier than others, meaning they possess a higher level of carotenoids, which is better for your health.

10. The health benefits of broccoli are so great that it is one of those foods that should be a regular addition to your menu.

TOFU - HEALTH BENEFITS

TOFU - HEALTH BENEFITS
Delicate curd made by adding a mineral salt to soymilk; then pressing the curds together into a solid block.
THE MAJOR NUTRIENTS IN SOY:

Soy foods are rich sources of protein, fiber, calcium, B-vitamins, and iron. They also contain some other substances which may all have potential cancer protective effects. These substances are: phytochemicals, isoflavones (also called phytoestrogens – specifically, genistein and daidzein), protease inhibitors (substances that act to stop the action of enzymes), phytate (acts like an antioxidant), phytosterols (plant substances related to fats – i.e., cholesterol), saponins (antioxidants), phenolic acid (antioxidant), and lecithin (a fat).

HEALTH BENEFITS

Heart Disease:  Eating soy foods may reduce blood cholesterol levels, which may reduce the risk of heart disease.  Some preliminary research shows that it is the isoflavones or phytoestrogen called  genistein in soy foods that may directly lower blood cholesterol levels.

Osteoporosis:  Eating soybeans, which are good sources of calcium and protein, may be and easy way to help build strong bones and maybe even reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Also, the protein in soybeans helps to conserve calcium in our bodies.

Cancer:  The American Cancer Society’s dietary guidelines for reducing the risk of cancer include choosing plant source foods and limiting the intake of high fat foods.  These two guidelines make soyfoods the perfect solution to potentially reducing the risk of cancer through diet.
1. Protease inhibitors in soyfoods appear to reduce the risk of colon, lung, pancreas, esophagus, and breast cancers.
2. Phytate in soyfoods acts like an antioxidant, potentially reducing the risk of both breast and colon cancers.
3. Phytosterols in soyfoods protect the colon from harmful bile acids, potentially reducing colon tumors; they also have been potentially effective in reducing skin cancer.
4. Saponins in soyfoods are antioxidants that have potentially cancer-protective effects; they also have potential to prevent mutations in cells that lead to cancer.
5. Phenolic acid in soyfoods is another antioxidant that appears to have cancer-protective effects also – against mutations in cells as well.
6. Lecithin, a fat in soyfoods, appears to reduce lung tumors in mice.
7. Plant estrogens, also known as  isoflavones or  phytoestrogens in soyfoods have been identified as having cancer-protective effects by potentially stopping the growth of cancer cells.
Excerpted from “Estrogen the Natural Way”, Nina Shandler
Menopause:  Isoflavones in soybeans have the potential of reducing symptoms associated with menopause such as: hot flashes and sleep disturbances.  The weak estrogen-like activity in soyfoods may help to reduce these symptoms.

Sunflower Seeds - Health Benefits

Sunflower Seeds - Health Benefits
Sunflower seeds are the gift of the beautiful sunflower that has rays of petals emanating from its bright yellow, seed-studded center. The flower produces grayish-green or black seeds encased in tear-dropped shaped gray or black shells that oftentimes feature black and white stripes. Since these seeds have a very high oil content, they are one of the main sources of polyunsaturated oil.

Looking for a health-promoting snack? Enjoy a handful of mild nutty tasting sunflower seeds with their firm but tender texture to take care of your hunger and get a wealth of nutrition at the same time. Sunflower seeds are available at your local market throughout the year.

Health Benefits
1. A handful of sunflower seeds will take care of your hunger, while also enhancing your health by supplying significant amounts of vitamin E, magnesium and selenium.

2. Anti-Inflammatory and Cardiovascular Benefits from Sunflower Seeds' Vitamin E.

3. Sunflower seeds are an excellent source of vitamin E, the body's primary fat-soluble antioxidant. Vitamin E travels throughout the body neutralizing free radicals that would otherwise damage fat-containing structures and molecules, such as cell membranes, brain cells, and cholesterol.

4. By protecting these cellular and molecular components, vitamin E has significant anti-inflammatory effects that result in the reduction of symptoms in asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, conditions where free radicals and inflammation play a big role.

5. Vitamin E has also been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer, help decrease the severity and frequency of hot flashes in women going through menopause, and help reduce the development of diabetic complications.

6. In addition, vitamin E plays an important role in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Vitamin E is one of the main antioxidants found in cholesterol particles and helps prevent free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol. Getting plenty of vitamin E can significantly reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis.

7. In fact, studies show that people who get a good amount of vitamin E are at a much lower risk of dying of a heart attack than people whose dietary intake of vitamin E is marginal or inadequate. Just a quarter-cup of sunflower seeds contains 62% of the daily value for vitamin E.

8. Phytosterols are compounds found in plants that have a chemical structure very similar to cholesterol, and when present in the diet in sufficient amounts, are believed to reduce blood levels of cholesterol, enhance the immune response and decrease risk of certain cancers.

9. Calm Your Nerves, Muscles and Blood Vessels with Sunflower Seeds' Magnesium.Magnesium helps reduce the severity of asthma, lower high blood pressure, and prevent migraine headaches, as well as reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.

10. Improved Detoxification and Cancer Prevention from Sunflower Seeds' which contain the trace element Selenium.

Detoxify you Body Today with an Ionic Detox Foot Bath Services in St. Petersburg Fl at Healthy Being Wellness Center 727-502-3464

Foot Bath Spa for Foot Detox

Healthy Being Wellness Center offers detox foot spa services, a holistic way of approaching disease through saturation of the blood, tissues cells and organs with ions. The Detox foot spa creates a similar environment as a walk along a beach, only more powerful, because your feet are in direct contact with the ions being made in the water.

These naturally stimulating and relaxing sessions are based on ionization of water and osmosis to draw toxins from the body.  One of the latest developments in the detox field is the detox foot spa. It works by sending a small current of energy through the body to energize the body and help it return to its natural state of energy and balance. The body can also absorb negative ions produced by the detox foot spa through the feet.

How does the Detox Foot Spa Work?

Detox Foot Spas operate through a process called electrolysis. This is done by generating the proper amount of current in the water causing the water molecules to divide producing negative ions. Once the negative ions are present in the water, the body absorbs these ions through osmosis

Based on Bioenergetics, it creates an ion energy field similar to that found in the human body. This stimulates cellular energy and enhances the body's ability to cleanse itself internally and naturally at an increased rate, restoring and normalizing the correct pH balance and energy levels.
The ionization process of the Detox foot spa pulls toxins out of your body through your elimination routes ( colon, skin, breath, urine).  Ions energize the body and neutralize a myriad of toxins. These neutralized microscopic particles then pass easily through the skin and tissue and are deposited in the water or sloughed naturally through sweat, bile and urine pathways.  Most people are shocked at the different colors that the water will turn, even after just a few minutes of using the foot bath.

The water changes colour regardless of whether there is a person’s feet in it or not. This is due to the reaction of the copper array and the polarisation of solids in the water. However, there will normally be 2-3 times more cellular debris in the water when combined with a person’s feet. The toxins in the body are re-ionized at the molecular level and react with the copper array. They produce coloured debris in the water which can be black, green, brown, yellow, white or blue. The colour and amount of debris will depend on the person’s energy state and toxicity levels before each treatment. Water analysis documentation from several treatments has shown a dramatic increase in metals in the water after a treatment.

Healthy individuals often feel more energy, and experience a greater feeling of well-being.

Patients with pain, edema, gout, headaches, and swollen joints have often reported immediate relief.

Other patients with arthritis, allergies, lymph edema, neuralgia and other symptoms have experienced relief and benefits with multiple treatments.

Why Schedule a Detox Foot Bath Treatment?

Ion cleanse detoxification accelerates change in the body. Aging and disease states are characterized by a diminishing anabolic capacity and an increasing catabolic capacity. Toxic buildup of cellular waste and debris is the inevitable outcome of these trends. Environmental toxins, heavy metals in water we drink and food we eat, even the air we breathe can overwhelm our own body systems. The ongoing periodic detoxification is essential to maintain health and avoid disease.

Mushroom Facts

Mushroom Facts
Mushrooms are really not a vegetable, but a fungus.  Fungus is a plant that does not have roots or leaves, does not flower or bear seeds, doesn’t make its own food, and doesn’t need light to grow.  Mushrooms grow best in dark, damp places.

Mushrooms come in many shapes, sizes, and colors.  The umbrella-shape at the top of the mushroom is called the cap and can be the most colorful part.  The underneath side of the cap contains spores and gills. The stem of the mushroom is called the stalk.  The base of the mushroom is called the hyphae.

In ancient times, mushrooms were thought to be magical.  People were forbidden to eat them unless they were warriors or kings.

When mushrooms grow in a circle, they are called fairy rings because people in the olden days thought they were made by fairies dancing in the night.

Since mushrooms are grown from microscopic spores, mushroom farming is a step-by-step process that involves: two phases of composting; spawning (mushroom farmers collecting the spores); casing (a soil mixture that acts as a water reservoir that is placed on top of the mushroom spores); pinning (the growth stage where the shape of the mushroom forms); and harvesting.

Archaeological evidence indicates that humans have been eating mushrooms for thousands of years. The first cultivators of mushrooms appear to have been the Greeks and Romans. Ancient Egyptians considered mushrooms to be food for the royals. The French adored the fungus and began harvesting them in caves during the seventeenth century. These famous fungi didn't reach popularity in the United States until the late 1800s.

Mushrooms are found all over the world and have been a very honored food in many cultures.

About half of the mushrooms harvested in the United States come from the Kennett Square area of Pennsylvania.  Kennett Square has been named the “mushroom capital” of the world. There are over 38,000 mushroom varieties today. Some are edible and some are highly toxic.

Here's a small sample of the most popular edible mushrooms you'll see in the market:
Agaricus (White or Button) - These mushrooms are the most common variety prepackaged in supermarkets; available fresh, canned, or frozen. White mushrooms are mildly flavored, are tasty when eaten raw but even more flavorful when cooked.

Chanterelles, or Girolle - These trumpet shaped fungi are highly regarded mushrooms favored for their gold to yellow color, and rich flavor, ranging from apricot to earthier tasting. Chanterelles are best eaten fresh, although they are also available dried or canned.

Crimini, or Italian Brown - These mushrooms are similar to the button variety, yet they are darker in color, have a richer flavor, and have a more dense texture. Criminis were once an imported mushroom but are now grown domestically.

Enoki, or Enokitake - This fungi takes on a sproutlike appearance with small caps and thin, long, stems. Native to Japan, white in color, with a light fruity taste, these mushrooms are excellent when served raw in soups and salads.

Morel - These mushrooms are highly priced and highly prized for their intense earthly flavor. They are usually found in the wild, although can now be grown commercially. This conical shaped, honey combed surface fungi is small, with dark brown hues, is suitable for stuffing and is ideal for sauces and stews.

Oyster or Pleurotus - These mushrooms grow in clusters, and range in color from off-white to shades of brown. Subtly tasting like an oyster, its chewy texture is more suited to cooked dishes.

Porcini - Porcini mushrooms are well valued for their meaty texture, interesting flavor, and distinguishing shape. These mushrooms vary in size and are domestically grown or imported from Europe depending on the season. This variety is usually expensive, but is considered one of the finest-tasting mushrooms.

Portobello - These are large cremini-like mushrooms that are sometimes the size of a regular hamburger! These fungi are circular, flat, and long, with a dense, chewy texture. Portobellos are excellent for grilling or roasting.

Shiitake - Shiitake mushrooms were originally cultivated on natural oak logs and only grown in Japan, but are now available domestically. These mushrooms are large, black-brown, and have an earthy rich flavor. This fungi is enjoyed in stir-fry, soups, or even a meat substitute. Dried Shiitakes have more intense flavors and are sometimes preferable to fresh.

Cooked mushrooms are an excellent source of niacin and a good source of riboflavin
