Ten Popular Mental Disorders
Ten Popular Mental Disorders
1- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
It is also known as OCD. he disorder basically takes you to a state where one starts hallucinating and the imaginations start causing stress and nervousness. It may lead you to act a little different and perform certain actions over and over again. he actions could be simple like hand washing or something aggressive. he acts of those who have OCD may appear paranoid and potentially psychotic. However, OCD sufferers generally recognize their obsessions and compulsions as irrational, and may become further distressed by this realization. According to a team of Duke University-led psychiatrists, behavioral therapy (B), cognitive behavioral therapy (CB), and medications should be regarded as first-line treatments for OCD.
2- Social Anxiety Disorder
Social anxiety disorder (SAD or SAnD) is also referred to as social anxiety and social phobia. he disorder takes a person to a state of isolation. he individual gets nervous when is surrounded by people around. his causes stress and inhibits the individual to perform even some of the basic tasks of everyday life like grocery shopping. A person with the disorder may be treated with psychotherapy, medication, or both. Research has shown cognitive behavior therapy, whether individually or in a group, to be effective in treating social phobia.
3- Bipolar Disorder
It is commonly known as bipolar affective disorder or the manic-depressive disorder. During the disorder, the person starts suffering from varying mood levels. his could occur multiple times in a day. he alternating behavior is termed as mania. In the beginning it is termed hypomania. Patients can also show signs of depression. Bipolar disorder is often treated with mood stabilizing medications and, sometimes, other psychiatric drugs.
4- Schizophrenia
People have recently become aware about the disease. When people suffer from it, they become unable to respond to their surroundings normally. he disease can affect their ability to see, hear, smell, taste or touch. he level of the disease can vary from one person to other. In worst cases, patients may also suffer from hallucinations and disorganized thinking and speech. he primary treatment of schizophrenia is antipsychotic medications, often in combination with psychological and social supports. A number of drugs have been associated with the development of schizophrenia, including cannabis, cocaine, and amphetamines. About half of those with schizophrenia use drugs and/or alcohol excessively. he role of cannabis could be causal, but other drugs may be used only as coping mechanisms to deal with depression, anxiety, boredom, and loneliness.
5- Body Dysmorphic Disorder
It is also known as BDD commonly. It is quite different from other disorders. he patients suffering from dysmorphia syndrome become obsessive about their bodies. People can spend countless hours in front of the mirror under the delusion that something is not right with their body. Furthermore, mental and physical abuse, and emotional neglect, are life-experiences that can contribute to a person developing BDD. he symptoms of body dysmorphia include psychological depression, social phobia, and obsessive compulsive disorder. he affected individual may become hostile towards family members for no reason. A combined approach of cognitive behavior therapy (CB) and anti-depressants is more effective than either alone. he dose of a given anti-depressant is usually more effective when it exceeds the maximum recommended doses that are given for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) or a major depressive episode.
6- Clinical Depression
Major depressive disorder (MDD) (also known as recurrent depressive disorder, clinical depression, major depression, unipolar depression, or unipolar disorder) is a mental disorder characterized by an all-encompassing low mood accompanied by low self-esteem, and by loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities It is a very serious disorder wherein a person completely isolates himself from the surrounding. He is no longer interested in the day to day activities with any reason. ypically, patients are treated with antidepressant medication and, in many cases, also receive psychotherapy or counseling, although the effectiveness of medication for mild or moderate cases is questionable.
