Wine and Chocolate: A Happy Easter Indeed!

The festive holidays that mark the beginning of spring come with many temptations. Choosing to live well is to take these temptations and turn them into healthy treats that celebrate the season. Wine and chocolate can be good for you- or evil.

A glass of red wine is packed with powerful antioxidants that have been found to reduce the risk or heart attack and stroke, all while improving brain function, increasing lifespan, fighting cancer and decreasing the effects of aging. Phytochemicals, such as flavonoids and resveratrol, act as antioxidants and prevent “free radicals” from causing cellular damage in the body.

The benefits of red wine (and dark beer like Guinness) favor the cardiovascular system by relaxing the blood vessels and inhibiting the oxidation of unhealthy cholesterol. In moderation, alcohol can raise your good cholesterol (HDL-cholesterol) and thin your blood, preventing clotting and lowering the risk of heart disease.

When it comes to chocolate, the darker the better!

On a month where multitudes of chocolate bunnies fill the grocery store shelves, it’s easy to feel like a kid in a candy store. It’s O.K. to give in to temptation, just be smart about it.chocolate is good for you

The benefits of chocolate have been known for thousands of years and some native tribes who regularly consumed cocoa showed very low rates of cardiovascular disease. Epicatechins, the natural compound found in cocoa, may offer significant benefits to those who’ve previously suffered from a stroke by its ability to restore function to blood vessels. Chocolate even contains chemicals associated with happy emotions.

Remember that not all chocolate is created equal. The more processing, like heat and light, chocolate is subjected to, the less antioxidants it has. Added ingredients like sugar and dairy can turn the otherwise beneficial treat into something quite the opposite; the milk in milk chocolate interferes with the absorption of beneficial antioxidants. Consuming a moderate amount of an organic, unprocessed, dark chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa is ideal.

Limiting alcohol to one glass per day is recommended for optimal health benefits. Keep in mind that drinking heavily can lead to weight gain; one bottle of wine is about 480 calories (that’s the equivalent of two 20-ounce Cokes!) For some, sulfates and tannins in wine can even trigger migraine headaches.

So indulge on these plant phenol-rich super foods during this holy season… but keep well by indulging in moderation. Happy Easter, everyone!

Daily Diet: Milk Allergy Relief Drug on the Horizon

Daily Diet: Milk Allergy Relief Drug on the Horizon
Allergies affect approximately 40 percent of children in America and allergic disorders rank #1 among children’s chronic diseases. Food allergies, which affect 5 percent of children, can be one of the more dangerous types, and in some cases requires constant vigilance of every bite of food a child takes. But help may be on the way for those with milk allergies, and maybe even those who suffer from reactions to peanuts, eggs, and other common foodstuffs.

Xolair, manufactured by Genentech, is an asthma drug that is in trials to test the effects of allergy desensitization. A small preliminary study was conducted simultaneously at Stanford University Hospital and Children’s Hospital Boston, where they found that the drug helped to quiet an overactive immune response to dairy. Due to its success, a larger study has already been launched and is currently ongoing.

The initial study involved eleven children with severe dairy allergy. On an allergy scale of 1 to 100, the children ranked at the high end, all in the 90th percentile, which equates to severe allergic—and possibly life-threatening—reactions. Over the course of nine weeks, the children received injections of Xolair, which blocks the immune protein IgE. They then took the medication for an additional two to three months, while slowly increasing their intake of milk, working up to two ounces per day. For two more months, the children had a daily milk intake of two ounces.

At the end of the study, with nine of eleven children finishing the course of treatment, they were tested with an eight-ounce glass of milk. All nine children were able to drink the entire amount without any side effects.

Milk allergies affect 2 to 3 percent of infants in the United States and is the most common allergy in infants and small children. Typical symptoms of dairy allergies include respiratory (asthma, wheezing, constriction of throat), gastrointestinal (severe gas, diarrhea, vomiting), and dermatological (hives, rashes), as well as serious anaphylaxis, which requires immediate medical attention.

Milk allergy sufferers need to be very careful about checking ingredients in everyday products: there are the obvious ones like milk, ice cream, yogurt and cheese, but dairy can also be hidden in bread, cereal, instant soups, powdered breakfast drinks, margarine, lunch meats, pancake/biscuit/cake mixes, and more. Look not only for milk in the ingredient list, but also casein, whey, rennet, lactalbumin, lactalbumin phosphate, lactoglobulin, lactoferrin, lactulose, hydrolysates, and even things like cheese flavoring and artificial butter flavor.

Daily Diet: Is the Dukan Diet the Hot New Trend?

Daily Diet: Is the Dukan Diet the Hot New Trend? It is always hard to predict the front end of a trend, and never more so than in the diet realm. But we seem to like to celebrate, talk about, embrace, and test out diet programs. Given that it is time to get ready for shorts and bathing suit weather, it just may be time to jump on a new bandwagon, hopefully finding success in something new. And will that new be the Dukan Diet?

According to magazine Marie Claire, Jennifer Lopez and Gisele Bundchen both reportedly turned to the new French Dukan Diet, to help shift those post-pregnancy pounds. And now rumors are swirling that princess-to-be Kate Middleton may be turning to this diet plan to prepare for her upcoming nuptials. This diet, which originated in France by nutritionist Dr. Pierre Dukan, is living large in over 1. 5 million French households, where women appear to be finding success.

There are four stages to the Dukan Diet, which incorporate some of the best of the best diet strategies. Phase one, the Attack Stage, is a high-protein, no-carb approach, a stricter version of Atkins Diet Plan and South Beach Diet Plan. There is a list of 72 protein-rich foods to choose from during this week of dieting.

The second phase alternates a high-protein diet with a vegetarian diet on alternate days (also call the Cruising Stage). In addition to the aforementioned 72 protein-rich foods, there is the addition of 28 low-carb vegetables.

Next up is a Consolidation Stage in which carbs are added back into your daily diet in small amounts to avoid weight gain. You are allowed two celebration meals per week and the goal is 1 pound for every 5 days in this stage.

Finally, once you have reached your goal weight, the Stabilization Stage kicks in. This fourth and final phase has a bit of a twist: you can eat what you want every day except one day per week (designated as Thursday) when you revert to the Attack Stage and eat a high-protein, no-carb regimen. Dr. Dukan believes that by taking off the weight this way and remaining true to the Stabilization Stage, that you can remain at your goal weight for life.

A book, based on the diet, is available in French in Europe and has been translated into 10 other languages. An English U.K. version was released in May of 2010, and had already hit the #1 spot in the diet, women’s health, and men’s health categories before even being released.Amazon U.S. shows that the book should be available any day.

While you wait for this book to become available and become part of a trend in 2011, you can find similar diets that can help you on your weight loss journey with a few quick clicks. Real Life Diet Plans Best Diet Plan

Real Life Diet Plans Best Diet Plan
Real Life Diet Plans Best Diet PlanCalories are calories, right? If you eat too many calories then you gain weight. Eat fewer calories then you lose weight. It doesn't sound too complicated does it? However, when it comes to weight loss, people are making weight loss more and more complicated. Everywhere you go, you see people are spending thousands and thousands of dollars on new diet plans each and every day.

There are several different diet plans on the market. They range from "fad" diets to low carb diets to diet pills and more. It is estimated that Americans spend $33 billion a year on weight loss foods and diet plans, according to the American Dietetic Association.

When you consider a weight loss plan, you can start with this proven diet plan. Successful diet plans incorporate a healthy lifestyle that you can begin and keep up throughout your life. This means you need to develop healthy eating habits and exercise on a daily basis.

When you are looking at diet plans, beware of those diets that offer the following:
  • Quick fixes
  • Fast weight loss
  • Less than 1,000 calories per day
  • Foods defined as "good" or "bad"
  • A required food product
  • Requires a multivitamin or other vitamin supplement
  • Elimination of a particular food group
  • Lack of long, random studies that proves the diet works
Many diet plans are low carb plans. These diets are heavily debated, as carbohydrates are considered to be a part of well-balanced meal plan. The Journal of the American Medical Association believes that even more information is needed to determine if low-carb diets are safe or not. These diet plans often require that you eat large amounts of protein and fats. In order to satiate your cravings for carbs, you will be driven to eat more fat, but this can have an adverse affect on your cholesterol levels as well as heart disease.

Other diet plans include those that restrict carbohydrates and calories. However, when you reduce carbohydrates and calories, you also limit the amount of essential vitamins and minerals that you consume from your foods naturally. These diets are also high fat, and can increase cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease.

Food combination diets are also popular. Again, these diet plans tend to be high-protein, high-fat and low-carbohydrate. These diet plans state that you should combine certain foods that contain protein and fat, and eliminate sugars, or carbs.

As you can see, the wide majority of diet plans out there want you to restrict one of the food groups that you need for a well-balanced diet. The best diet plan is one that is low in calories, but not below 1,200 calories a day. With that, you also need to exercise regularly. The key is to consume fewer calories and burn more calories through exercise if you want to lose weight, and that is a diet plan that is free of charge.

All the following health benefits are inherited from various articles and are based on study of pro advice.

2) Lessens the risk of heart attack.
3) A study showed 20 % increase in cortisol ( Body's stress fighting hormone).

Effects of Milk on Tea:
It is found in India and some other countries that milk is added to the tea. Though milk has it's own health benefits, it spoils or nullifies the health benefits of black tea. The proper way to prepare tea is to boil the tea first and if someone wants milk with it can pour it externally.
However nutritionist's suggest that plain black tea without adding milk to it is good for health.

It has been found that relaxing effect of the black tea was completely vanished when milk was added to it.

Vegetarian Diet Benefits Part 2

As the title suggests this is my second post related to my first one titled Vegetarian Diet Benefits Part 1. So lets start the countdown ahead.

1) Toxic Chemicals are Avoided.

Meat, dairy products, fish all come with toxics which are used to preserve them. Fish carries the cancer causing substances like PCB's , DDT and some heavy metals ( minerals required by body in very less amount ) . These toxics can't be removed from body even after cooking or freezing the fish. Though fish is a good source of nutrition, one should take care of above mentioned things.

2) Say Bye To Back Problems

Back pain, which is a complaint of almost 3 out of 10 individuals who's job is sitting for almost throughout a day can be totally avoided. Here's an insight how? Back pain is caused due to blockage of arteries ( due to cholesterol ) running to the back and thus degenerating the discs. Plant based diet can avoid this situation alltogether by keeping arteries clear of the cholesterol responsible for blockage.

3) Say Bye To Food Borne Illness

It has been estimated by CDC that in US that more than 50% of Cows, pigs and chicken carry some kind of bacteria or are infected with one or the other parasite.

4) Increasing Fiber Intake :

The process of pushing waste out of the body is called as detoxification. Being a vegetarian , increases your fiber intake which aids in removing the toxics from the body. Sorry to say but meat contains no fiber.

5) Vegetarian Benefits to Woman :

Our body secrets fluctuating hormones, to balance the different moods and situations. Plants, grains and legumes balances the levels of such hormones which helps a woman to go through menopause without much complaints.

Vegetarian Diet Benefits Part 1

Have you ever considered of being a vegetarian ever? Well after reading this post, maybe you can give vegetarian diet a thought! I came across a new term called Vegans. Vegans are those who eat no animals and animals products.

1) Living longer life: It has been stamped that those who are vegetarians can live 7 years more than non-vegetarians. Vegans can live 15 years more than meat fond people. Backed by China Health Project which states that vegetarians are less prone to cancer, heart attacks and other ailments.
2) Stronger Heart : Vegetarian diet is very low in calories and cholesterol levels than other diets. So cardiovascular diseases which are a reason for death of highest number of people in United States can be adopted instead of the high level of cholesterol and saturated fats found in American Diets.
3) Avoid Cancer : Cancers like Prostate, colon and skin cancer can be prevented by adopting a plant based diet. Tumor cells which are responsible for cancer are better controlled by vegetarian's immune system. Pineapple is one fruit which fights cancel cell wells. Read more about Pineapple and Facts.
4) Stay Slim : Many people want to stay slim and it has been like a stamped fact that vegetarians are a lot slimmer than meat eaters due to low fat and calorie but high protein vegetarian diet.
5) Detoxify Your Body : Vegetarian diet helps detoxification helping us in keeping away all the toxins. Remember a doctor always suggest a vegetarian diet before starting the detoxification programme.
6) Stronger Bones for Longer Time : Animal products like milk makes blood acidic and to maintain a balance our body pulls calcium from bones. So it is better to intake leafy vegetables like broccoli and legumes. In non-Veg diet, excess calcium intake has adverse effect on calcium absorption ad retention by body. In which case the body actually excrete calcium and results in bone disease like osteoporosis. A fact is vegetarian bone stays much longer than non-veg bone. ( I hope, I used the right line there )
