Stress Relief: Meditation Is An Effective Tool
For obtaining stress relief, meditation as an alternative is gaining in popularity.
I remember seeing comedy shows or skits when I was young where someone is practicing meditation. There was usually one person closing his eyes while the other person tried to imitate him or simply made snide remarks. While we used to look upon meditation as being funny, ridiculous, or just plain odd; we now know about all the benefits it has to offer.
Originally, meditation was used to focus and gain religious knowledge. Now, it is commonly used to reduce stress and live longer, happier, healthier lives.
So, for stress relief, why is mediation so helpful?
First of all, it helps focus the mind on something that is deeply and spiritually rooted. By focusing on one thing, you’re forced to forget the world around you and all the stressors that come with it. By closing your eyes and sitting in a quiet room, you also filter out the sights and sounds that may stress you.
Meditation also helps repair the physical and mental damage caused by stress. The chemicals present in your body actually change during meditation making you more relaxed and peaceful.

How Yoga and Pilates Improve Your Abs & Lower Body
If you’re like me, you’re probably not a really big fan of sit ups and crunches. They’re awkward, show mediocre results, and if your don’t do them properly, they can cause severe strain to your neck and back. But if you want strong, toned abs, you have to do crunches, right? That used to be true, but now you have several options that don’t involve any stressful, painful crunches. You can use Yoga, Pilates, or both to have sleek, toned abs, plus strong back muscles and a totally healthy overall physique.
Yoga operates on several levels to help tone your abs, along with the rest of your body. The basic concept of Yoga is to hold yourself in poses. Holding these poses requires maintaining a correct posture. Just being in a good posture can strengthen your abdominal muscles. They are part of the core muscles that help you achieve and maintain proper posture. Even though you can’t feel it, these muscles are constantly making tiny adjustments and getting a great workout.
In Yoga, the poses are held for extended periods of time. Slow even movements and long poses give your core muscles an even better workout and help develop stamina through muscle strength. You’ll probably be able to notice a visible difference in your abs, but even if you can’t, you’ll know they’re stronger when you can maintain better balance for longer periods of time.
Another major part of Yoga is focused deep breathing that allows your body to relax as you pose. This deep breathing involves using your abdominal muscles instead of your shoulders to help inhale and exhale. In addition to your abs helping you maintain balance, you also exercise them even more simply by breathing.
Pilates is similar to your abs with the benefits it offers. Pilates requires use of your abdominal muscles for proper posture and for breathing, just as Yoga does; however, instead of remaining stable, you move your arms and legs around. This is actually just as beneficial for your abs because you have to use them to keep your body still while your arms and legs are in motion. Natural movement would have your torso move, but your abs and back muscles work to keep it stable.
Even though Yoga and Pilates and constantly working your abdominal muscles, there are specific exercises you can do to target these areas, especially in Pilates. These will give you the extra boost you need for more drastic results.
Neither Yoga or Pilates can be learned overnight; however, once you begin to master one of both or these arts, you will get an abs workout like never before without even thinking about crunches.
Getting the Most from Aerobic Exercise
The goal of aerobic activity is to increase cardiovascular health and lose weight. To be effective, aerobic exercise needs to be performed within your target heart rate zone for at least thirty minutes. If you can hang in there longer, the benefits will increase. During aerobic activity, fat is burned from that stored in the body. This is optimal for you because burning stored fat leads to weight loss. If you can spare thirty minutes a day three days a week, use it to maximize your routine in the time you have available.
Aerobic Exercise with equipments
Apply circuit training techniques to your aerobic routine. This can be done one of two ways. First, let’s say that the treadmill is your favorite cardio machine. Create a program that will challenge your heart every step of the way. Start out with a light walk for the first five minutes to warm-up. A warm-up is important to avoid muscle cramping and muscle injury.
When you are starting your aerobic exercise routine, after the first five minute interval, try a brisk walk at a speed you can handle with proper form and breathing. Maintain this pace for five to ten minutes. Increase the speed even more until you are performing a slow jog. If you are new to jogging/running, five minutes at the outset is good enough. Lower the speed back down to a fast walk for the next ten minutes. If you only have thirty minutes to spare, decrease the brisk walk to five minutes and perform a five minute cool down.
While you are on your aerobic exercise routine, remember that cool downs are just as important as the warm-ups. The cool down gives you a chance to catch your breath again and stretch your legs. If you have forty-five minutes to spare, continue alternating between the brisk walk and the jog, making sure to leave five minutes for a cool down.
Try the circuit training philosophy on different types of equipment in the same session. Try this: Start out on the elliptical trainer. If your workout place has an elliptical with poles, you’ll benefit from the upper and lower body working at the same time. Vigorously work out for about ten to fifteen minutes. Without resting, transition to the recumbent bike. Pedal away for about ten to fifteen minutes. Again, if you only have thirty minutes finish up with a cool down on the treadmill.
Aerobic exercise at Home
Working out at home is not a problem when it comes to maximizing aerobic benefits. If you use aerobic videos or DVD’s, choose one that conforms to your time constraints, but also provides a varied upper and lower body workout. All aerobic exercise videos include a warm-up and a cool down phase.
Exercise is a lifelong commitment. Whenever you have time to do some type of physical activity do aerobics or any other exercise that you love to do. Everything you do adds up to a better life! Keep up with your Aerobic exercise routine!
Exercise – The Best Energy Booster
Are you feeling tired, lately? Just can’t seem to wake up in the morning? Feel the need for an afternoon nap? Instead of drinking coffee or soda, try a work out instead. Studies have shown exercise to be a better energizer than even prescription stimulants. Many cases from fatigue are caused by inactivity, not by too much activity. So if you’ve been feeling run down and need a jump start, try adding exercise to your daily routine.
Many people start an exercise regime and expect to feel wonderfully energized and alive the same day. Those people are sadly disappointed when they find themselves sore and dragging. After a week or two with no results, many people give up and assume it just won’t work for them. But studies have repeatedly shown that exercise boosts energy levels in a majority of people; the key is to be persistent. The first few weeks your body is just adjusting to the extra stress of working out. Once your body is used to the additional work, you’ll begin to feel the energizing effects of a good workout.
You also shouldn’t judge how much energy you have right after a workout. Most people feel fatigued right after they’re done, but feel more energized a little later. Your muscles need time to recover from the workload. If you feel extremely fatigued, or you don’t get and energy burst within an hour of working out, you’re probably pushing yourself too hard. Try doing a little less and building up to a greater workload.
Many people decide to start a workout routine, but are too tired to actually get to the gym or go for a run. If this is the case for you, monitor your energy level throughout the day. Pick a time when you generally feel most awake and try to schedule your workouts. After a few weeks, you should feel energetic enough to move your workout to a more convenient time.
If you still need convincing to go out and exercise, remember that a good workout can help improve the quality of your sleep. That will make you more rested and even more energetic the next day. So, if you’re feeling sluggish, get up and get moving. You’ll be feeling better in no time.
5 Tips for Preventing Osteoporosis

When bones get old, they tend to become less dense, weakening their structure. These weak bones begin to get tiny fractures. Because of their size, one of these fractures isn’t really a problem; however, if your bones are fragile enough for you to have osteoporosis, you will have many of these tiny fractures. In the end, they add up to a big problem.
The thing to know is that most osteoporosis cases are preventable. By following a few tips, you can keep your bones strong and dense, keeping you healthy for a long time.
1. Get plenty of calcium. Calcium is the building block of bones. If we’re short on calcium, then we can’t make our bones as dense and strong and you become susceptible to getting osteoporosis. You can get calcium through milk and yogurt, but also from green leafy vegetables and various soy products. If need be, you can also take a calcium supplement.
2. Get other essential nutrients. Calcium is actually no good if you don’t have Vitamin D, which allows you to absorb the calcium. During the summer, the best source of Vitamin D is the sun. During the winter you can try tanning beds, or try fortified products like Vitamin D milk and certain breakfast cereals. Other nutrients that are essential for preventing osteoporosis and keeping your bones strong are: Vitamin K, phosphorous, Vitamin C, magnesium, copper, manganese, zinc, iron, boron, and , protein. Unless you eat the world’s healthiest diet, it’s best to start taking a daily multivitamin.
3. Perform weight bearing exercise. You don’t need to start a weight training regimen at the gym. In fact, most women can get the appropriate amount of exercise simply by walking (you’re “bearing” your body weight). Getting up and moving for a few minutes every day is important for keeping bones strong. If you can exercise more, you should do so. Exercise is important for maintaining a healthy weight, another good way for preventing osteoporosis away. Just remember, losing too much weight is a good way to lose bone mass as well.
4. Drop bad habits. Some habits are better avoided for preventing osteoporosis. While having the occasional drink has actually been shown to improve the condition of your bones, you start to cause damage if you drink alcohol excessively. Smoking can also cause an increased fracture risk. Plus, quitting smoking is a good healthy choice all around.
5. Start Early. Most women wait until the first signs of menopause to start worrying about osteoporosis prevention. While menopause is when bones start to deteriorate faster, if you have weak bones to begin with, adding preventative measure may not do a whole lot of good. You should take the steps above as early as possible, and pass them on to your daughters too. Start early and prevent osteoporosis from afflicting your bones.
Isometric Exercises – Do They Work?
It works. It is great at building the specific sections of muscle groups that it works, it actually provides more muscle contraction than weight lifting and strength training that involves movement.
It’s cheap. Traditional isometric exercises require no gym membership and no expensive machines. They use walls and body parts to provide adequate resistance.
It’s fast and easy. Isometric exercises can be done in your spare time almost anywhere. If you can’t fit in a full workout, you can take a couple minutes out of your day to do a few exercises and still benefit.
This type of exercise used to be so popular, so why don’t we hear much about it anymore? One big reason is that it was replaced by traditional body building. That is because there are a few drawbacks to this type of workout.
Raises blood pressure. During isometric exercises, people tend to hold their breath. This causes a jump in blood pressure that could cause serious problems. If you perform these exercises, make sure to monitor your breathing.
Too specific. While bodybuilding works your muscles through the entire range of motion, isometric exercises only work a specific part of the muscle group at one time. To achieve the effects of weight lifting, you need to perform the exercises at many different angles and positions.
Despite these drawbacks, isometrics are still being used and can be beneficial when incorporated properly into your workout instead of simply replacing it. Here are a few ways to add isometric exercises into your workout routine.
Do them at work. Don’t have time to go to the gym and lift weights? There are many simple isometric exercises you can do while at work using the wall, your desk, or your own body as resistance. Why not skip getting an extra cup of coffee in the afternoon and do a quick workout instead?
Add modern equipment. Isometric exercise was the precursor to traditional body building, so it didn’t have the benefits of all the equipment we have available now. Modern isometric workouts include training tools like free weights and resistance bands. Isometric exercise simply uses them while staying still instead of with motion
Mix it up. Instead of doing an extra workout to add in isometric exercises, add them to your current routine. For instance, if you lift weights, hold the weight in a steady position after you’re done with your reps.
While you shouldn’t use it as your only bodybuilding routine, isometric exercise can be a great addition to improve any body.
Exercise is Good for Your Mental Health
Boosts your energy. A sedentary lifestyle can make you feel fatigued. When you work your muscles with regular exercise, you feel more energized and ready to face the day. Exercising also helps you have a more restful sleep and fall asleep faster. Regularly working your muscles also makes them less likely to fatigue with normal activity.
Helps relieve stress. Endorphins from exercise make you feel better and have a better outlook on life, but exercise can also provide a time for reflection; further easing a stressful life. Many of us don’t have time alone without thoughts to contemplate our problems. Some types of exercise, such as running, can provide time to think about the day and make plans.
Improves self esteem. After a workout, you feel that you’ve accomplished something and it increases your feeling of well being. It generates good feelings to think that you are doing something to take improve yourself. In return, feeling of accomplishment makes you more likely to work out again, thus starting a healthy cycle.
Increased social interaction. Having friends is an important part of leading a happy life. Exercise can be used to stay in touch with old friends by scheduling regular walks or runs. It can be also used to meet new friends at the gym or through sports. These kinds of activities help you feel accepted and loved.
Many doctors and therapists recommend exercise as part of their treatment for anxiety or depression.
How to Choose the Right Supplement for Bodybuilding
Many people dream of having large, sleek, muscles, but getting them is harder than most imagine. Many people just walk into a gym, lift weights and expect to get big and buff, but it doesn’t usually work that way. In order to build big muscles, you need a healthy diet and supplements for bodybuilding in addition to your workout routine. If you’ve been to a supplement store, you’ve probably seen shelves or even walls full of supplements claiming to help you get big muscles. Here are some tips and tricks for choosing the right one for you. The most important step is to get the proper types of supplements for bodybuilding. These are the most important:
Protein. You likely learned in third grade that muscles are made of protein. If you want your muscles to grow, you have to put a lot of protein into your body. This is one essential supplement for bodybuilding.
Creatine. This keeps your muscles from getting tired as fast so you can do more reps and work out longer. It also decreases the time it takes for your muscles to recover between work outs, so you can lift weights more often.
Vitamins and Minerals. Keeping on with our search for effective supplements for bodybuilding, we come to Vitamins and Minerals. You don’t need special, specific health store supplements to get these nutrients. Just take a quality, well balanced multivitamin everyday. This will make sure your body has all the nutrients it needs to build your muscles. It’s also a good plan to take one even if you’re not trying to bulk up.
Many supplements for bodybuilding may include other ingredients to help boost muscle growth; just be sure to research them and make sure they’re appropriate for you before you actually take anything.
Now before you start taking any supplements for bodybuilding, take a look at yourself in the mirror. Is their a nice pudgy layer of fat surrounding your body? If you said yes, then these supplements are not for you; at least not yet. If you get tons of calories to fuel muscle growth, you’re just going to end up building muscle under the fat layer making you look even bulkier without the muscle definition. Sure, having more muscle burns more fat, but you’re going to get better results if you take supplements for bodybuilding that are specifically geared to burn the fat while you build the muscle. This will make it much more likely for you to get the lean, defined body you’ve always wanted.
The best way to find a suitable supplement for bodybuilding is to talk to an expert. Your first step should be to talk to your doctor. They may not be trained in which brand is which, but they should be able to tell you how your body works develop some guidelines for you. You should also talk to a nutritionist. If you belong to a gym, there’s probably a nutritionist there you can talk to for a small fee, or even for free. They can help you set up a diet and supplement regimen tailored for you.
Good luck with your bodybuilding endeavor!
It Helps to Exercise after having Baby

Here are some tips to help you get on track with your exercise plan:
Involve your baby. Don’t wait till your child is asleep to try to get a decent workout. Get a baby sling so you can go for a walk with your baby. Starting exercise after having baby will become easier if you involve baby in your routine.
Don’t start too soon. Perhaps you are eager to start doing some exercise after having baby. But, wait, your body needs some time! Whether you’re had a vaginal delivery or a C-section, your body has gone through quite a bit. If you start a workout routine too soon, it can be damaging to your health. It’s usually recommended to wait 6 weeks before you start trying to workout; however, if you had a vaginal delivery, you can use those first 6 weeks to strengthen your vaginal muscles and start stretching exercises. Just be sure to check with your doctor before you start any exercise program.
Don’t work too hard. It’s pretty likely that you haven’t been able to do a normal workout for at least a few months, maybe more. Just like starting any exercise program, you should not start full force right away. Trying to do too much is likely to do more harm than help. Before you start working out, ask your doctor for recommended exercises after having baby and how often you should do them. Remember, if you hurt yourself, you’re not going to be able to take as good care of your baby.
Fit exercise into you schedule. I know the difficulties you will get into the moment you start making a routine for doing some exercise after having baby. While having a regular routine is helpful, it’s almost impossible to get a baby to conform to your schedule. This means you have to change your schedule to fit your baby’s.
You’ll probably have to squeeze in workouts where you can. While drawing up a routing for doing exercise after having baby, choose exercises that you can do in different places at different times. Get an exercise tape or something else you can do at home. You should also remember that two 15 minute workouts or three 10 minute workouts can be just as helpful as a half hour work out.
If you can set a rigid work out schedule, that’s great. If you can’t, set a looser schedule (I will work out for thirty minutes before I go to bed) and be sure to stick with it.
Starting to do some exercise after having a baby to get back into shape can be difficult, but with time, patience, and planning, you too can get back to your healthy self.
Dancing for Exercise: Bring Some Rhythm in Your Regimen

Are you getting bored with your traditional workout? Is going to the gym just too bothersome? Well then why don’t you get your next great workout at the local dance hall? Dancing for exercise is fun.
There’s nothing that gets your heart pumping like dancing. You don’t have to be good; you just have to move around. The simple act of moving your arms and legs around is enough to get you a great cardio workout. Studies have shown that ballroom dancing is almost as effective at working your heart as common workouts such as running.
Also, when you are dancing for exercise, it doesn’t matter much what kind of dancing you’re doing, whether it’s ballroom, country line dancing, or even belly dancing. You can even just dance around your living room to the radio (also a great way to work out with the kids!)
Dancing works all the different muscle groups. Activities like jogging and swimming feature repetitive movements that work the same muscles over and over. That’s why it’s easy to tell a runner from a swimmer, just by looking at what muscles on their body are developed. On the other hand when you are dancing for exercise, unless you do the same dance over and over, you’re going to be doing various different movements. This allows you to work all your different muscle groups giving you a great total body workout you’ll be able to see in a mirror. This is also a great motivation to take classes and try new styles of dance.
If you have one or more people there with you, you can enjoy the conversation and excitement; you’ll probably completely forget you’re working out. Try getting a group of friends to go dancing for exercise once a week with you. You can even use the fact that dancing is a great workout as a selling point to convince them to join you. Just be careful; depending on the venue, you may be encouraged to drink. Don’t burn off all your calories just to add them back with alcohol.
So what are you waiting for? Why not change a workout this week to a fun time and start dancing for exercise?
Beginners Guide to Pilates Exercises and Equipment
Pilates is a great new form of exercise that has recently swept the nation. Similar to yoga, it focuses on aligning and relaxing the body while strengthening its core muscles. The best part is that it’s easy to get started, even for total beginners. The best option for getting an optimal Pilates workout is to work with a professional. The best place to find an expert is at a Pilates Studio. These can be found in many cities. They not only have people that specialize in teaching Pilates, they also have machines specifically designed to give you an optimal workout.
If there aren’t Pilates studios in your area with Pilates equipment, you should look around for a class. Many health clubs will offer these classes for a lower price than going to a studio. While you probably will be doing exercises on a mat instead of machines, you’ll still be taught by someone who knows what they’re doing and can help you use proper form and attain the maximum benefit.
If you can’t find a class or studio near you, you have a few other options to try. The first is to buy a good book or set of tapes on Pilates that teach you specific moves and how to do them. These tapes may also incorporate equipment such as a ball or resistance band. This equipment can be purchased at most fitness supply stores.
If you have money and space to invest in this fitness regimen, you may consider buying a Pilates machine. They offer more resistance and can improve the effectiveness of your workout. These can be bought from various retailers and are similar to those found in Pilates Studios. For the best workout at the best price, you should find a machine that offers the ability to do many different exercises all on the same machine.
Pilates equipment and Pilates exercise can be great to help with strength, balance, and posture, among other things. Just be sure not to neglect doing cardio work as well. While it can’t replace aerobic exercise, Pilates is a great addition to your exercise regime.
