Exercise Is Actually Good For The Knees

Exercise Is Actually Good For The Knees

For years, studies have offered conflicting opinions on whether exercise is good for knees. A new report released today by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) provides strong evidence that exercise is, in fact, good for the knees.

The report, titled "What is the Effect of Physical Activity on the Knee Joint? A Systematic Review," was published this month in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise®,ACSM's official scientific journal. A research study led by Donna Urquhart, Ph.D., and Flavia Cicuttini, Ph.D., examined the effects of physical activity on individual parts of the knee.

"Several studies have already examined the impact of physical activity on the knee as a whole, but none have looked at the effect of physical activity on individual parts of the knee," said Dr. Cicuttini, head of the musculoskeletal unit in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University in Australia. "As it turns out, exercise affects each part of the knee differently, which helps explain why there have been conflicting reports for so long."

According to the team's findings, while exercise was linked to osteophytes, or bony spurs, there were no detrimental changes to joint space, the place where cartilage is housed. There were beneficial effects on cartilage integrity, with evidence of greater volumes and fewer defects.

"These findings are significant, as they suggest that osteophytes, in the absence of cartilage damage, may just be a functional adaptation to mechanical stimuli," said Dr. Urquhart.

The report comprised data from 28 studies, representing 9,737 participants from all parts of the world. All included studies examined the relationship between physical activity and knee osteoarthritis and also included MRI evidence of osteoarthritic knees when investigating disease progression or healthy knees when investigating disease incidence.

Osteoarthritis - a degenerative joint disease that attacks cartilage and underlying bone and often preys on knees, hips and hands - affects nearly 27 million Americans and is the leading cause of disability in noninstitutionalized adults.

5 Best Bicep Exercises

At the beginning of each class I teach, I ask my clients if they have any requests. While it usually takes a moment for everyone to think about what they really want to work, I know that once I hear someone call out “biceps!!” I’ll hear a lot of questions about how to tone and strengthen the arms. I’ve found that both men and women are seeking ways to build their biceps beyond the traditional moves, like bicep curls. If you’re seeking a more creative workout that will challenge and define your biceps, read on.

5 Best Bicep Exercises

1. Bowling: With medium weights in each hand, begin with your arms at your sides, palms up, elbows slightly bent. Slowly press your arms up to shoulder height, and lower them back down to the starting position (think of the movement you would use while bowling). Remember to keep the arms as wide as your shoulders, and slightly bent. Raise and lower the weights at the same pace.

2. Serving the Tray: Use medium-heavy free weights, one in each hand. Begin with your elbows in at your sides, arms bent at 90 degrees, palms up. Imagine holding a heavy tray stacked high with glasses. Slowly press your imaginary tray a few inches out in front of your body, keeping the elbows bent. Pause briefly, focus on the biceps, and pull the tray back in. Repeat the forwards and backwards movement, remembering to keep the elbows bent and the pace consistent.

3. Bicep Rotations: This is a new twist on the classic bicep curl. Begin with moderate to heavy weights in each hand, arms straight down at your sides, palms up. Slowly raise the weights as you would with a bicep curl. When you get to the halfway point, rotate the weights so that your palms are facing one another as you bring the weights all the way up. Lower the weights, reversing the motion. This is a great way to work the outer and inner biceps. Remember not to use your wrists to rotate, and to focus on flexing your biceps to power this movement.

4. Crazy 8’s: Begin with heavy weights in each hand, elbows at your sides, palms up. Raise the weights halfway up and lower down to the starting position 8 times. Next, begin with the weights at the halfway point (arms bent at 90 degrees) and raise them up towards your shoulders, lowering them only halfway down. Finish the set with full bicep curls, all the way up towards your shoulders, and all the way down towards your thighs, being aware of your pace and repeating each rep with a full range of motion.

5. Medicine Ball Toss: Hold a medicine ball with both hands, and quickly throw the ball up and catch it for 30 second sets. Experiment with different hand placement to find which feels most comfortable for your wrists and actively engages the biceps. Tip: Try to throw the ball as high as you can with your arms slightly bent, palms up, and slowly catch and lower the ball.

A Stomach Exercises

So what stomach exercises are a waste of time? Well, it is likely to be heard, and may also do so in vain! ABS, ABS and lift your feet, which many believe is a lean and ripped in time. I have news for you, this did not happen in the near future! To cheat, you have to do is fat, high-intensity exercises burn and increase your metabolism. traditional exercises, as these do not help your metabolism, burn more fat and no!

Well, that physical activity in the stomach? Good question! In general, the best stomach exercises, abdominal exercises no! I used to be an endless series of failures and raise the legs, sometimes two or three times a day, because I've always said that the so-called experts, who had a way of cheating. But the results of many months very few, I found that the objectives of the abdominal muscles and burning fat is crazy! The classes are best known for the basic exercises.

includes stomach exercises are effective because the target of many muscle groups. The problem with conventional ABS work outs is that they are too small and isolated. People seem to think that if the target zone can burn more fat in this region. No! If you exercise, you burn is fat in the body. Why is it so important to really fly high intensity and movement of muscles.

Well, of course, no lean, muscular stomach purely exercises correctly. It is important that the diet supplement will help you burn fat metabolism and increase. Failure to follow a diet low in carbohydrates, simply because it has fewer carbohydrates, and therefore not need as much as possible to burn, not how it works! Low carb diets can fail and cause damage to your ability to burn fat. Instead, the stations of foods rich in protein. Proteins are the basis for muscle growth, then not much.

Remember that physical activity is less than an hour. If the exercises are more than 75 minutes, can not be the best muscle burning, due to a long training is very intensive training in short sharp.

Andy Wong is a bodybuilder is concerned that in recent years to improve the flow of training children to achieve their objectives, lean and ripped. If you know exactly what stomach exercises give six-pack stomach hard as a rock

10 Reasons Why Exercise is Good for Your Weight

A recent Time magazine article, "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin," is misleading at best. Exercise is critical to losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight, especially when paired with healthy eating habits. Countless studies, numerous experts who study exercise, and the millions of people who have lost weight all attest to the fact that working out works.

1. Exercise zaps belly fat

Regular moderate to high intensity aerobic exercise has the greatest impact on reducing abdominal fat -- the dangerous fat that increases your risk of diabetes and heart disease.

2. Exercise controls calories

You need to burn more calories than you consume in order to lose weight. Regular exercise uses up excess calories that would otherwise be stored as fat.

3. Exercise keeps lost pounds MIA

Ninety percent of people who have successfully lost weight and kept it off for a year do about an hour of physical activity a day.

4. Exercise boosts metabolism

You'll lose fat when you diet without exercising, but you'll also lose muscle, which means you'll burn fewer calories. The more muscle you have, the higher your metabolism and the more calories you'll burn.

5. Exercise does more than the scale shows

If you gain 3 pounds of lean muscle and lose 4 pounds of fat, you've actually experienced a 7-pound improvement in your body condition, despite the scale only showing 1 pound of weight loss..

6. Exercise curbs emotional eating

Working out has been proven time and time again to help regulate mood, which has a direct effect on people who eat when they're stressed or upset.

7. Exercise creates a healthy chain reaction

Healthy habits tend to cluster together.. When people make positive changes, like getting more exercise, they tend to work on other health improvements as well, such as eating better.

8. Exercise brings on the fun

Rock-climbing is more exciting than eating a celery stick. That's why it's sometimes easier to be active to stay slim than to maintain a strict diet.

9. Exercise stops hunger

People who exercise and diet are actually less hungry than those who only diet, according to at least one study.

10. Exercise ups energy

Regular physical activity increases stamina by boosting your body's production of energy-promoting neurotransmitters. That gives you even more motivation to get moving and shed pounds.

Aerobics include simple exercise which does not require any other equipment, just yourself. You can do it anywhere and anytime. Aerobics basically, is an exercise where you keep your major muscle group in action for a long time in action. Exercise like walking, climbing, stairs, dancing, swimming can be termed as aerobic. Aerobic exercise helps you loose weight and keeps you cardiovascular system healthy and fit.

Aerobics Tips

Taking a walk after your lunch or during the tea break watching some colorful things in the surrounding won't hurt you. Lets say you are home, try taking a walk in the neighborhood. Park your car a little far from your regular parking place and walk some distance to get some exercise. While going shopping, walk for 10 minutes straight so that your are done with session for the day.

Jogging Tips

Have you ever wondered what a smog can affect you while jogging? Or is it that you just go out and fulfill your wish to jog with your jogging suit and jogging shoes on. This post will concentrate on smog effects and general jogging tips.

What is Smog? Smog is a combination of fog and smoke. Dictionary says it is a haizy air that causes difficult breathing conditions. Gases from the burnt fuel react with fine particles in air along with heat and sunlight. Smog can cause rickets as it greatly reduces the Vitamin D levels in the surroundings.

Jogging Tips:

1) Don't jog in haizy air. Instead you can use your jogging nike shoes to run in a gym on a trade mill. You can substitute jogging in open to indoor jogging if it's smog out there as it causes difficult breathing conditions.
2) Always remember to stretch your body before and after jogging. In winter especially it is important since it takes some more time compared to summers for the body to warm up. Push ups, sit ups, stair case and jumping jacks can do the tricks if you regulate them in your schedule.
3) Breathing through nose is another important part of jogging. Your nose maintains the balance between oxygen and carbon di oxide with the help of cilia and mucos membranes which are a barriers for unwanted air particles. If one breathes through mouth, he/she just compromises this process which can't be termed as healthy.
4) Always wear bright colors while jogging and stay hydrated.
5) It is also important to wear proper jogging shoes to avoid ankle injuries. One should go branded shoes which will be capable of absorbing shocks and provide a cushion around.
6) Never jog on an uneven surface or a slope. If you do, there are chances that you might get injury.
7) Don't start jogging all off a sudden. Start walking faster and then get going. This is enable your body to prepare itself for the exertion.
8) Quit smoking as it decreases the stamina.
9) Take a Walkman with you while jogging. Music helps to get you in rhythm and cools your mind.
10) Consult a doctor if after jogging you feel strain/pain in certain part of your body for a longer time.
11) Overweight people should consult doctors before starting their jogging exercise to determine how much stress they can bare.

Exercise and Type 2 Diabetes

One of the most undemanding and the most workable ways to knock over blood sugar amount, eliminate the dangers of “cardiovascular disease,” and perk up health and welfare in general is exercise.

In spite of that, in today’s inactive world where almost every indispensable job can be carried out online, from the ergonomic chair in front of a computer, or with a streaming line of messages from a fax machine, exercising can be a hard argument to win over.

The Weight of Exercise

Everyone should exercise, yet the health experts tells us that only 30% of the United States population gets the recommended thirty minutes of daily physical activity, and 25% are not active at all. In fact, inactivity is thought to be one of the key reasons for the surge of type 2 diabetes in the U.S., because inactivity and obesity promote insulin resistance.

The good news is that it is never too late to get moving, and exercise is one of the easiest ways to start controlling your diabetes. For people with type 2 diabetes in particular, exercise can improve insulin sensitivity, lower the risk of heart disease, and promote weight loss.

Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is on the rise. The number of people diagnosed with diabetes every year increased by 48% between 1980 and 1994. Nearly all the new cases are Type 2 Diabetes, or adult-onset, the kind that moves in around middle age. Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes include increased thirst, appetite, and need to urinate; feeling tired, edgy, or sick to the stomach; blurred vision; tingling or loss of feeling in the hands.

The causes of type 2 diabetes are complex and not completely understood, although research is uncovering new clues at a rapid pace.

However, it has already been proven that one of the reasons for the boom in type 2 diabetes is the widening of waistbands and the trend toward a more deskbound and inactive lifestyle in the United States and other developed countries. In America, the shift has been striking; in the 1990s alone, obesity increased by 61% and diagnosed diabetes by 49%.

For this reason, health experts encourage those who already have type 2 diabetes to start employing the wonders that exercise can do for them. Without exercise, people have the tendency to become obese. Once they are obese, they have bigger chances of accumulating type 2 diabetes.

Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reports that over 80% of people with type 2 diabetes are clinically overweight. Therefore, it is high time that people, whether inflicted with type 2 diabetes or not, should start doing those jumping and stretching activities.

Getting Started

The first order of business with any exercise plan, especially if you are a “dyed-in-the-wool” sluggish, is to consult with your health care provider. If you have cardiac risk factors, the health care provider may want to perform a stress test to establish a safe level of exercise for you.

Certain diabetic complications will also dictate what type of exercise program you can take on. Activities like weightlifting, jogging, or high-impact aerobics can possibly pose a risk for people with diabetic retinopathy due to the risk for further blood vessel damage and possible retinal detachment.

If you are already active in sports or work out regularly, it will still benefit you to discuss your regular routine with your doctor. If you are taking insulin, you may need to take special precautions to prevent hypoglycemia during your workout.

Start Slow

For those who have type 2 diabetes, your exercise routine can be as simple as a brisk nightly neighborhood walk. If you have not been very active before now, start slowly and work your way up. Walk the dog or get out in the yard and rake. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park in the back of the lot and walk. Every little bit does work, in fact, it really helps a lot.

As little as 15 to 30 minutes of daily, heart-pumping exercise can make a big difference in your blood glucose control and your risk of developing diabetic complications. One of the easiest and least expensive ways of getting moving is to start a walking program. All you need is a good pair of well-fitting, supportive shoes and a direction to head in.

Indeed, you do not have to waste too many expenses on costly “health club memberships,” or the most up-to-date health device to start pumping those fats out. What you need is the willingness and the determination to start exercising to a healthier, type 2 diabetes-free life.

The results would be the sweetest rewards from the effort that you have exerted.

Exercise and Pregnancy

Prescribing a medication for pregnant women is a complex process.

Before obstetricians and gynecologists decide which dose of which drug can best treat a condition without putting any harmful side effects on the mother and the baby, they consider the patient’s age, general health, the number of months before delivery, tolerance for medications, and any other drugs the pregnant patient may be taking.

Prescribing exercise on pregnant women has to be just as scientific and precise. The type, intensity, frequency, and duration of a “dose” of exercise are all critical. One person’s healthy, vigorous workout could be hazardous to another. These dangers may be greater in pregnant women because they are more likely to have strains and other serious side effects for the would-be mother.

However, if exercise will be implemented and carried out in a normal, average range, exercise will not have an effect on the overall condition of the pregnancy and especially on labor or delivery.

Pregnancy

Quality prenatal care should be given to a mother during her pregnancy. She should be prepared for the normal delivery of a healthy baby. Complications should be prevented at all costs.

All of these things are boiled down to the fact that a pregnant woman should be cared in such a way that she will not be compelled to do vigorous work but should not also stay in bed and be inactive until she gives birth to her baby.

Consequently, a pregnant woman’s condition varies in relation to the growth and development of the baby in side her womb. Therefore, it is necessary that proper health guidance be provided by her physician during her visit.

Moreover, it is important to keep the pregnant woman’s life active in order to promote good health, not only for her but also for the baby most importantly.

Physical conditions like blood pressure, weight and health status is usually monitored during the pregnant woman’s visit to her doctor. For this reason, it is significant to note that exercise can be the number one factor in order to keep these aspects in good condition.

As the health experts contend, adequate physical and emotional information is needed by a pregnant woman to prepare herself for delivery. She needs practical health messages in keeping herself and the baby healthy.

Hence, for mothers or would-be mothers who are not yet aware why they should exert some effort in engaging into moderate, normal exercise, here is a list of some of its benefits so that you will be able to understand the reason why pregnant women have to exercise regularly:

1. Defiance against fatigue

As muscle becomes fatigued, it produces less force. To accomplish a task like climbing the stairs, for example, or shoveling snow, more units of muscle must be called into play to back up the wearied muscles.

The tired muscles are both less efficient and less effective. Hence, this will just put more strain on the pregnant woman because of the weight that is continuously adding up each day. That is why tired muscles will usually result to leg cramps or sore muscles.

What every pregnant woman must know is that exercise improves the condition of the muscles and their ability to work longer without fatigue.

2. Reduce backaches

Even when you sit or stand, some muscles are working, and such relatively easy postures can tax some muscles and cause fatigue. The muscles of the lower back, for example, can be exhausted and worn out by the effort of keeping erect when a pregnant woman stand still for several hours.

With exercise, a pregnant woman can correct this error by developing her posture.

3. Increase the amount of oxygen

Work and exercise rely on glycogen, a substance produced by the body from complex carbohydrates and stored muscles and liver. The supply of glycogen in the muscles determines and limits the duration of activity. Exercise depletes the glycogen in the muscles and leads to tiredness.

However, when glycogen is depleted by strenuous activity, it is replaced in quantities greater than before, as if the body recognized the need to lay in a larger supply of fuel.

Hence, oxidation is essential for converting glycogen to the energy that pregnant women need to wiggle a finger, flex a muscle, or practice the lungs and heart for some blowing action during normal delivery.

These are just some of the many benefits exercise can bring to pregnant women. Besides, nothing is completely wrong for a pregnant woman doing some moderate exercises. The only important thing to remember is that before starting an exercise program, whether pregnant or not, it is best to consult your doctor. As they say, doctors know best!
