Backache Home Remedies

Backache Home Remedies

Back pain (also known as dorsalgia) is pain felt in the back that usually originates from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the spine.

Back pain may have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain; it can be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas. It may be a dull ache, or a sharp or piercing or burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include symptoms other than pain, such as weakness, numbness or tingling.

Back pain is one of humanity's most frequent complaints. In the U.S., acute low back pain (also called lumbago) is the fifth most common reason for physician visits. About nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year.

The spine is a complex interconnecting network of nerves, joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, and all are capable of producing pain. Large nerves that originate in the spine and go to the legs and arms can make pain radiate to the extremities.

1. Boil ten tulsi leaves in one cup of water until the syrup is reduced to half a cup. Add salt to it after cooling. Take this mixture daily. For severe backache, take it twice a day.
2. Two or three cloves of garlic should be taken every morning. An oil prepared form garlic and rubbed on the back will give a good result in backache.
3. A dose of powdered dry ginger (sonth), sweet soda and salt, if consumed with hot milk or water, redresses backache.
4. The first and foremost home remedy for back pain is getting sufficient rest. When we rest, our body is able to recuperate from any damage caused. Rest also ensures that the tendons and ligaments are not strained. Avoiding exertion and stress is extremely essential to relieve lower back pain naturally. In case of muscular tension, home remedies for back pain include a good massage. A massage not only helps in relieving strain but also helps in enhancing blood circulation which promotes proper functioning of the body. Massages are a good form of relaxation as well. The use of a pain relieving ointment is also advisable when dealing with a backache, provided one is sure of the cause of the pain. It must be kept in mind that a wrong method of massage or the use of an unsuitable ointment could aggravate the condition. Hence, before opting for any home remedy it is advisable to consult a doctor so as to ascertain the true cause of the pain. As mentioned earlier, neglect can lead to more damage and must be avoided under all circumstances.
5. Yoga is recommended form of exercise for chronic back pain treatment. Yogic asanas which are beneficial in the treatment of backache are bhujangasana, shalabhasana, halasana, uttanpadasana and shavasana. In case of persistent backaches, acupuncture for back pain is a recommended form of treatment but should be performed only by a trained person.
