Toothache and Remedies

Toothache and Remedies
It is said that no pain can be bigger than a dental pain. Toothache can be explained as a situation in which  one experiences severe pain in the nerves connecting to the teeth, or there is a swelling on the gums.

Causes
Toothache or any other tooth-related problem is really painful and disturbing. It affects our life and our daily activities completely. The main causes of tooth decay are cavity in tooth, excess consumption of junk foods and sweets and chocolates. Improper brushing, poor quality of toothpaste and toothbrush is also responsible for toothache. Stress and mental tension and anxiety may also worsen the toothache.

Sometimes, a “toothache” may be caused by a problem not originating from a tooth or the jaw at all.Pain around the teeth and the jaws can be symptoms of diseases of the heart (angina, heart attack), ears (such as inner or external ear infections), and sinuses (air passages of the cheek bones) such as sinusitis (infection of the sinus cavities). Therefore, evaluation by both dentists and concerned doctors are sometimes necessary to diagnose medical illnesses causing a "toothache '.

Symptoms
There may be severe pain or pressure, or to hot or cold stimuli. The pain may persist for longer than 15 seconds after the stimulus is removed.
Pain while chewing
Hot or cold sensitivity
Bleeding or discharge from around a tooth or gums
Swelling around a tooth

Prevention
Most people can avoid severe dental problems with regular dental care. Have your dentist’s telephone number easily available in case of an emergency.
Maintain a healthy diet.
Establish a good program of cleaning your teeth to remove the food particles. Brush your teeth after eating and also before going to bed.
Use a soft toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste.
Floss between teeth daily.
Arrange to have your teeth cleaned by a dentist or dental hygienist twice a year.
Wear a protective dental guard or headgear while playing sports to help prevent injury.

When to Seek Medical Care
You should call your doctor or dentist for advice for the following concerns:
Dental pain may not be relieved by over-the-counter medications.
Pain may be associated with swelling of the gums or face, or you may have discharge around a tooth.
Broken or knocked-out teeth may occur from an injury.
Wisdom teeth can cause pain. As wisdom teeth (molars) are coming out, they cause inflammation of the gum around the erupted crown.

Treatment
Self-Care at Home
Avoid very cold or hot foods because this may make the pain worse.
Relief may be obtained from biting on a cotton ball soaked in oil of cloves.

Dip 1 clove of garlic in rock salt and place it on the affected tooth. OR Keep a piece of raw onion inside the mouth on the affected tooth.
OR
Clove serves as an excellent home remedy for toothache. Keep a clove in your mouth and suck it. You
can even apply clove oil on the affected tooth.
OR
Lime is considered valuable in maintaining the health of teeth.
OR
Consume the juice of wheat grass, as it acts as a fabulous mouthwash in case of tooth decay.
