Diets to Control Thyroid Problems

If you are struggling with thyroid problems, you should look at your diet as a means to help control thyroid problems. practitioners of alternative medicine have suggestions for foods that can support thyroid function and help you feel better, in conjunction with more traditional treatments.

Protein sources
Protein is important for normal body function, and most of us get our protein from meat, poultry and fish. Try to avoid meat that has been given hormones. Organic beef, pork and poultry are hormone free.
Fish is another excellent source of protein and some, such as salmon, we also provide vital omega-3 fatty acids. Some species (such as tuna and swordfish) may have elevated mercury levels, and should be eaten in moderation.

Surprise! The protein can also be obtained from seeds (flax and pumpkin, mostly), seaweeds, and nuts. Peanut butter and almonds are good sources of protein, a bonus if you are trying to reduce their meat consumption.
Salt and sweeteners
Sal is also important for the body, although in excess it can lead to other problems. Many Americans use iodized table salt, but you may want to switch to a non-iodized salt, like sea salt or kosher salt.

Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, is controversial. Although considered safe, some people suspect that it may lead to thyroid problems. Among them is Janet Starr Hull, who was diagnosed with thyroid disease, Graves disease, in his book "Sweet Poison", which speaks of his illness, he feels as a result of the use of aspartame.

Soy
Although one might think that soy is always beneficial, is not the case of thyroid patients. Soy can interfere with the absorption of drugs that regulate the thyroid. Patients experience sudden weight gain, feeling of malaise and loss of energy while taking soy.
